Travel Back to the Roaring Twenties
In 1920, America banned alcohol and kicked off a decade of wild defiance. Prohibition drove the sale of alcohol underground into a world of bootleggers, rumrunners, and secret speakeasies. Savannah played its part too, earning the nickname “The Spigot of the South.”
At the American Prohibition Museum®, that entire rebellious era comes to life through more than 20 interactive exhibits, lifelike wax figures, and authentic artifacts.
When you finish exploring the Wets and the Drys, a working speakeasy awaits behind the secret door. Some history is best experienced with a craft cocktail in hand! It is easily one of the most talked-about Savannah attractions in City Market — and a second historic museum sits right downstairs.

Inside the American Prohibition Museum
On January 17, 1920, the 18th Amendment made the manufacture and sale of alcohol illegal across the United States, kicking off one of the wildly defiant chapters in American history. Instead of ending drinking, Prohibition pushed it underground, creating a booming black market run by bootleggers, rumrunners, and organized crime syndicate leaders. Savannah, with its busy port and winding coastline, became a key smuggling hub known as “the Spigot of the South.”
America’s only Prohibition museum tells that entire story: the crusading Drys who pushed for the ban, the defiant Wets who ignored it, and the colorful cast in between. Walk among more than 20 exhibits to see props and era-accurate items, including Carry Nation’s hatchet, the fast cars of moonshine runners that seeded NASCAR, glittering flapper fashion, and the Tommy gun world of gangsters like Al Capone.
The era ended in 1933 when the 21st Amendment repealed Prohibition, and today you can toast that repeal yourself inside the Congress Street Up speakeasy.
Don’t forget: The Savannah Pirates and Treasure Museum® is right downstairs! Pair two top Savannah museums in one visit and chase the Roaring Twenties with the Golden Age of Piracy without ever leaving the building.
